Action one. Attention, action!

Setting: on coming out of school.

Giovanni: Hey guys, Do you watch what a nice goal! Guido: Giovanni, you’re thinking about the game, do you see how much homework we were assigned for tomorrow? Giovanni: I do some ahead of time so I can read one of my favourite books. Gino: Who’s coming to my place today? I have a new game. Camilla: Bye guys, thanks for you company. I’m home. See you tomorrow. All: Bye!!! (Camilla enters home, puts her bag in its place and hears knocking) Camilla: Who is it? Mailman: Mail for miss Camilla. Camilla: That’s me thank you! (The mailman goes, she reads the address on the letter and exults) How nice, that’s uncle Joakim, he had promised me… Senior Joakim: Dear Camilla, we haven’t seen back other now since that far week in October… being able to spend the fall holidays with you was really a magnificent gift for me! I hope you didn’t forget the crabs we fished down in the little inlet… Camilla: How could I? Senior Joakim: And you certainly remember the big telescope you wanted to try every evening - except for that cloudy night when we stayed in the kitchen preparing pancakes – Maybe you even miss it! Perhaps you will also remember that I promise to write you a story, well, here it is! If I got to write just today it’s not only because you turned eight years old few days ago, which is the same age I was I would wait for a little sister or little brother. There is also something, else great news which I will you tell you later. But in order for you to understand all, I must first talk to you about Mika. Camilla: I do not expect to remember everything as if were the day before yesterday, some details, I forgot them others, I have surely made them up: that happens, when what we have to tell has happened a long, long time ago. However, I remember well how the whole story began in the most normal way, one could say, provided that the coming of a little sister or a little brother may be considered normal. (I’m not so sure about that not always normal things are as normal as we believe). Senior Joakim: It all began in the dead of night: I was in bed and if I remember well I was having a passionate dream. J’s dad.: wake up J. it’s at dead of night, but the child can’t possibly know that, and he wants to come out of mama’s belly right now. J’s dad: (I sat up in bed) Do you mean the little brother! J’s dad: do you feel like remaining home by yourself while mom and I go to the hospital. aunt Helene will come with the first bus. Young Joakim.: Yeah, don’t worry. I’ll be playing with Lego. Camilla: I remember sitting in front of the window. I remained a long time contemplating stars, wondering, if somewhere, far away, there existed some form of life or if the earth were the only inhabited planet in the whole universe. Whatever may be the case at that moment I was the only inhabitant in the house and I felt a little bored… all of a sudden a fallen star streaked across the sky, so close that seemed to be falling in the garden, right in front of me. Senior Joakim. Abruptly I heard a big noise and for a few seconds I thought it could be mom and coming on the way back from the Hospital. I was wrong. As I looked out window, I saw a kid hanging from the apple-tree by his trouser’ rubber band: it was Mika. Of his spaceship I knew nothing about. As he told me later, has he understood he was getting nearer to an inhabited planet, out of curiosity he had opened the spaceship porthole…

Mika: Who are you? Young Joakim: My name is Joakim. Mika: And I am Mika. Tell me, why are you upside down? (J. collapses into laughter. Mika sticks his thume into his mouth J. laughs again) Young Joakim: It’s you who are upside down! Mika: (Mika sticks his thumb out of his mouth and shakes his fingers) When two people meet and one of them is with his head upside down, it is not that simple to determine who of the two is in the right position. Anyway it would be nice if you could help me go upon the surface of this planet. Young Joakim: You mean, go down! Mika: No, going up! Young Joakim: Now that I go get them. (J. helps M. to come down of the tree) (M. remains a little head down tieing a big strip of cloth around his belly He sat in a crouch for a while on his knees. Then he stood up to his feet looking around confused). Mika: (Pointing out the grass) I thought that was up (Pointing out up) and I also believed that was down. (He shakes his finger). I’m sure I’ve been travelling going up till I hit my head against this planet. (He kept on pointing out the land for a good spell, then he moved to the sky and last he pointed his finger to the moon). Joakim .: As he stopped goofing around, Mika got down on his hands and knees examining the grass; he sniffed it, he tore off a binch of blaces and put them into his mouth. Young Joakim: It’s no good. (He picks up an apple and hands it over to him) You can eat an apple. Is it good? Mika: (He bows) Young Joakim: Why do you bow? Mika: In the place where I come from, we always bow when someone asks a sharp question. And the deeper the question is, the deeper the bow will be. Young Joakim: And what do you do then when you have to greet each other? Mika: We try devising something smart to ask. Y. Joakim.: But why? Mika: (He bows) we try to think up something smart in order to make the other one bow. (J. bow’s; M. sticks his thume into is mouth) Why did you bow? Y. Joakim.: because you answered in a smart way to my question. Mika: An answered never deserves a bow. No matter how smart and right an answer it may seam to us, ne must never bow to an answer. He who bows he bends. You must never bend to an answer. Y. Joakim: And why not? Mika: An answer is a stretch of road that you left behind your shoulders. Only a question can point beyond.

Camilla: Those words seemed to me so wise that I had to refraw myself from bowing again.

S. Joakim: We two start becoming alike always more. Mika: one of the most important likenesses between us is that we are able to think, both on my planet Eljo and this, nature took billions of years to set up this faculty. Y. Joakim: That’s why our heads are so big. Mika: For those like you and, it is important being able to help each other. We are fortunate we can talk one another. If it were not so we would never have arrived to the point of reaching other planets. That’s an other likeness. S. Joakim: I thought something like that, too. “A small step for a man, but a big step for mankind” said astronaut Armstrong as he set his foot on the moon surface. Mika: “A small step for a man” Camilla: I startled. He had said exactly the same words I was thinking! Y. Joakim: What do you say? Mika: (He bows) A small step for a man, but… Y. Joakim: how do you know? Mika: for us mums of Eljo it is normal reading each other in our thoughts. We can have a long talk without pronouncing one word. S. Joakim: It was then, Camilla, that he talked to me about the big mountain. Mika: If you lived in a deep valley, and I came from another walley similar to yours, couldn’t we climb, each one on his side and shake hands on a high mountain top? Y. Joakim: (He bows) Mika: Even if the paths that take to the top were many, the mountain in itself would be exactly the same. And we too should be similar, because each one of us would be a sort of climber. Up there, on the top, we could sit and take breath after the long climb. Y. Joakim: You mean to say that you come from one planet and I come from another, yet we could meet on the same mountain? Mika: (He nodded) the powt is not just where we come from, but also where we’re going. Joakim : Aunt Helene broke the spell. Inviting me back in. But the evening we went on talking, the stars pierced the night as sharp pins. Y. Joakim: Why did you come here? Mika: Because I was supposed to meet you. You won’t believe I fell by change in your garden, just when you were by yourself waiting for a little brother? Y. Joakim: ( He bows) What do you mean? Mika: Dreamed to travel across the over space aboard my spaceship. For a love time I word see nothing but stars and galaxies. Only from time to time I happened to spot a comet. Then one day I sighted from afar a green- blue pearl which remanded a bit a piece of candy: was it possible it could be a living planet? I was so curious that I opened a porthole of the spaceship and I shamed: “Hey, is there anybody?” A moment later I lost balance and I fell off the porthole. Y. Joakim: If your trip town to this planet were only a dream, even the fart that we are sitting here together should be a dream. And if it be so one of us is dreaming. Mika: (He nodded) Y. Joakim: But I wonder then who’s really dreaming. Mika: It doesn’t matter what really matters after all is that we met on the big mountain top. It happens rarely that someone arrives up here. Y. Joakim: Over twelve hours have gone by since we met. Mika: Or just a few minutes. Travelling means moving around the world, dreaming, moving within the world. But perhaps we can’t travel in more than one direction at a time. Y. Joakim: he said these words with such a fervour, that I never forgot them. I’ll never cease wondering before the universe.

With love uncle Joakim
